Jay Mercer, M.D., C.C.F.P.

Dr. Mercer divides his time between family medicine in a fully automated office in Ottawa, and as Medical Director of cma.ca, the Canadian Medical Association’s Internet Portal. Previously, he spent several years in a combined family medicine and emergency practice in Midland, Ontario.

Jay has participated extensively on committees advocating the use of information technology in clinical practice. Prior to becoming a doctor, Jay was trained in strategic analysis and worked in the areas of data security, information systems and data management in both military and civilian environments.

He is an internationally recognized leader in the practical use of handheld devices in patient care, and founded a company that develops handheld computer software for this environment. Jay speaks and writes frequently about data security and confidentiality, handheld computing and physician practice automation for physician groups across Canada.
